Short Description of Instrument
The McElroy Diagnostic Criteria for Compulsive Buying are based on the DSM-IV criteria and are designed to address compulsive buying. They were developed based on 20 cases.
Comments/Special Instructions
These criteria are recommended as Supplemental since there is not a PD-specific measure for compulsive buying.
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
There is no scoring for these criteria, and they do not quantify severity. They are intended to help identify compulsive buyers by providing guidelines frequently seen in people who are compulsive buyers.
Rationale/Justification
Strengths: One of the first systematic assessments of compulsive buying.
 
Weaknesses: Not validated in PD, based on older DSM criteria.
